SMALL HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECTS (SHEP)

The need for harnessing hydro power, big or small, which is a renewable source of energy, is increasing throughout the world to meet the growing demand for energy. Small, Mini and Micro hydropower are well-recognized renewable sources which can provide electricity especially for the remote rural areas and hilly terrains of our country in a cost effective and environmentally benign manner. Kerala has a vast untapped hydro potential. The state is endowed with a large number of mountain streams originating from the higher elevations of the Western Ghats. These resources offer abundant scope for the development of small hydro power projects.

Arippara (SHEP)

Arippara (SHEP)

The Arippara SHEP is located in Iruvanjipuzha of Chaliyar basin. The site is accessible from Kandappanchal town and lies in Nellipoyil Village of ThamarasseryTaluk in Kozhikode District at a distance of 45 km from Kozhikode City. The Scheme envisages construction of an overflow type weir across the river, which divert water to an intake pool from where the intake structure and connected water conductor system (WCS) starts. A Surge tank is proposed to moderate the water flow during load acceptance and load rejection time. A penstock commencing from the surge tank is proposed to feed the two machines of each 2.25MW capacity. A surface powerhouse, with horizontal Francis Turbine is proposed at the right bank of the river with an installed capacity of 4.5MW (2x2.25 MW) anticipating 10 % over load.

The civil works of the projects was commenced in December 2015. The tender for the Hydro-Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical works are already awarded and currently progresses through the design and manufacturing stages.
